ABAP is a programming language used for developing applications for the SAP/R3 system. SAP runs applications written in ABAP/4. And ABAP stands for ‘Advanced Business Application Programming 4th generation. ABAP/4 can’t directly run on an operating system as it requires a set of programs to load, interpret and buffer its input and output. The architecture of SAP/R3 is three tiered consisting of a database, application and presentation servers. It is the application server that contains the SAP kernel to run a ABAP/4 program.
